1. Performance Objectives: HDS will be able to explain these objectives in writing and demonstrate these actions on a workstation at the end of the training.
  • Installing a printer - both locally and via the network
  • Mapping a network folder as a network drive in My Computer
  • Installing Software in Windows 7
  • Navigating within Windows 7 - Start Menu, Taskbar (Pinning), Search bar
  • Navigating withing Office 2010 - Navigating the ribbon, location of basic formatting tools, saving and printing

2. Sample Assessments for each objective:

  • Printer installation - list the steps to accomplish each type of printer installation. Demonstrate the procedure to install a printer locally on stand-alone workstations and install a network printer of domain workstations
  • Mapping a network folder - list the steps to accomplish mapping a network folder as a mapped drive in My Computer. Demonstrate procedure on both stand-alone or domain workstations.
  • Software Installation - describe the steps necessary to install software in Windows 7 while logged in as an Administrator or as a domain user. Demonstrate both on stand-alone and domain workstations.
  • Windows 7 Navigation - describe 3 differences between Windows XP and Windows 7's start menu, explain what features the search bar introduces into Windows 7's start menu, explain the function of the Taskbar and how to navigate multiple open windows from the same program (ie - 3 word documents), explain the steps necessary to log into a workstation
  • Office 2010 Navigation - describe the steps necessary to open a document, save a document, change font size and using bold and italics switches

3. In-house instruction will be delivered over the course of 8 hours on a single day. The morning session (4 hours) will be dedicated to Windows 7 while the afternoon session (2 hours) will focus on Office 2010. The final two hours will be dedicated to assessment and questions. This training will be structured to address the major issues IU staff encounter. Since our HDS consists of 3 IU staff members, each member of the HDS will have a laptop with Windows 7 and Office 2010 preinstalled to use throughout the training. The instructor will have another workstation attached to an overhead projector to demonstrate the steps necessary to accomplish each goal.

Our morning session will begin with logging into the workstation and working with/navigating Windows 7's interface. We will explore "My Computer" and explain how to map a network folder as a drive. Installing software and installing printers will be covered once the HDS are acquainted with the start menu and 'My Computer'. Finally, HDS will explore Windows 7's taskbar and how programs interact within it.

The afternoon session will focus on Office 2010 and its new ribbon taskbar. Many of the basic functions and hotkeys have not changed between Office 2003 and Office 2010 however, many basic functions are in completely different locations. HDS will begin with simple tasks opening a file and saving a file. They will move on to basic formatting and justification tools such as font size, using bold/italics with text. The final two hours will consist of review and assessment.

4. The impending move to Windows 7/Office 2010 will put a strain on the HDS as well as the IU staff that have to use this software on a daily basis. They are cognizant of the fact that they are the first line of help they will receive when something goes wrong and want to help get the IU staff member back to work as quickly as possible. They also realize that these are relatively simple steps for any member of the HDS and will require very little training to master these objectives. Ensuring that our entire HDS has had the same training guarantees that each HDS member can address any basic problems that may arise.

7. HDS will be taught using a project based approach. The instructor will walk the HDS through each procedure, demonstrating via an LCD projector as well as assisting each HDS member on their own workstation during the demonstration. Once the initial demonstration is complete, HDS will be asked to replicate the procedure by installing or configuring a difference piece of equipment, installing a different piece of software, pinning different icons to the taskbar or formatting different sentences in Word.

8. Since the HDS consists of 3 iu staff members, they will be taught individually. This approach is necessary since we are required to have a one on one sessions in order to test our delivery methods. After the one on one session, we are left with only one staff member since the instructor is also a member of the Help Desk Staff. Each staff member will be given a laptop with Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7 pre-installed and joined to the IU12 domain. This will give them access to any programs which they will be working with as well as access to network resources.

9. Pre-Test
  1. Have you worked with Windows 7 in the past? If so, where and which version have you worked with?
  2. Which versions of Office have you worked with?
  3. If you have worked with Office 2007 or Office 2010, describe some of the differences between those and Office 2003.
  4. Have you used the "Quick Launch" toolbar in Windows XP?
  5. How do you map a network folder in Windows XP?

Post-test
  1. What is the procedure for installing a network printer?
  2. How do you format text in Word to become bold or italicized?
  3. How would you search for a file in Windows 7?
  4. Which program, in the start menu, would you open in order to map a network folder as a drive?
  5. Is it possible to open programs located in the Control Panel from the search box?
